The CIA estimates that over half the population of Haiti cannot read or write. Most of the Haitians that can read and write never attain anything higher than a primary-level education. Despite these discouraging facts, the children in Ferrier are eager to learn. They take their education very seriously and study diligently, even though a rare textbook must be shared between many students.
